Stages of Baldness: Understanding Hair Loss Progression

Hair loss is one of the most common concerns among men today. While occasional hair fall is normal, progressive hair thinning or a receding hairline may indicate male pattern baldness, medically known as androgenetic alopecia.

Understanding the stages of baldness is important because it helps determine the most effective treatment option, including hair transplant procedures.

The Norwood Scale – The Standard Classification of Baldness

Doctors and hair specialists use the Hamilton–Norwood Scale to classify the stages of male pattern baldness. This scale divides hair loss into seven stages, helping doctors identify the severity of baldness and plan appropriate treatments.

Hair loss usually starts with a receding hairline at the temples, followed by thinning at the crown, and eventually progresses to larger bald areas if left untreated.

Stage 1: No Noticeable Hair Loss

Stage 1 represents a normal hairline with little or no hair loss. Most people at this stage have a full head of hair, and the hairline appears natural.

At this stage, hair transplant is usually not required.

Stage 2: Early Hairline Recession

In stage 2, the hairline begins to recede slightly, especially around the temples.

This stage is often referred to as a mature hairline, and hair thinning may still be minimal.

Preventive treatments such as medication or PRP therapy may help slow down further hair loss.

Stage 3: Noticeable Baldness Begins

Stage 3 is the first stage where baldness becomes noticeable.

The hairline recedes deeper at the temples, often forming an “M-shaped” pattern. Some individuals may also begin to experience thinning at the crown.

Many people start considering hair transplant treatment at this stage.

Stage 4: Significant Hair Loss

At this stage, hair loss becomes more visible.

A bald spot develops on the crown, while the hairline continues to move backward. However, a thin strip of hair usually separates the front and crown areas.

Hair transplant procedures can provide excellent results at this stage.

Stage 5: Advanced Hair Loss

In stage 5, the bald areas on the front and crown grow larger, and the strip of hair separating them becomes thinner.

Hair loss becomes clearly noticeable from most angles.

A hair transplant may require a higher number of grafts to restore natural density.

Stage 6: Severe Baldness

At stage 6, the remaining strip of hair between the crown and frontal hairline disappears.

The bald areas join together, leaving only hair on the sides and back of the scalp.

Hair transplant is still possible but requires careful planning.

Stage 7: Most Advanced Stage of Baldness

Stage 7 is the most severe stage of male pattern baldness.

Only a thin horseshoe-shaped ring of hair remains around the sides and back of the head, while the top of the scalp is completely bald.

Hair transplant options depend on the availability of donor hair.

Why Identifying the Stage of Baldness is Important

Knowing the stage of baldness helps doctors:

* Diagnose the severity of hair loss
* Choose the right treatment method
* Estimate the number of grafts needed for hair transplant
* Predict future hair loss patterns

Early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment results.

Quality assuarance

Arogyam Hair & Cosmetic Clinic takes several steps to ensure that quality is maintained for each and every patient. The key to quality maintenance is to implement quantizable quality standards and maintain proper documentation and review of processes. Downtown Hospital is an ISO 9001:2008 and NABH accredited hospital which demands strict adherence to quality control.Steps taken are:

Safety assurance: all procedures are done in the main OT of Downtown Hospital with its full complement of anesthesiologists and critical care specialists. Hence patients are assured of full safety standards at the same level as that of major surgeries including transplant surgeries.

Sterilization assurance: since procedures are done in the major OT full sterilization is maintained. Fumigation is done every week and swab tests are done to check for contamination.

Best instrumentation: Arogyam Hair & Cosmetic Clinic uses the best available instruments like 6X Heine Loupe for precision and accuracy, Blunt Titanium punches which avoids damage and transection of the Follicular Units, Choi implanters to standardise the process of planting and prevent damage during planting, Major OT level sterilization, fumigation and autoclaving of all instruments, etc.

Efficiency count: Efficiency counts for FUE like transection rates and speed of transplant are noted and documented for each case and reviewed every 10 cases. Arogyam Hair Transplant achieves international standards of transection and speed consistently.

Counting trays: Counting trays are used to contain the follicular units and all patients are given photographs on their mobiles which they can use to easily count the number of follicular units taken out so that they can be sure that they have received the correct number of FU's.

Dr. P. J. Mazumdar is the first and only American Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and all procedures are done following the ethical and technical guidelines of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery. As such, patients can be assured of receiving full professional care as per International standards approved by the ABHRS and ISHRS.

Correct recepient density: To ensure correct recepient density, 'density stamps' are used to ensure proper density is achieved. Angle and direction of hair is meticulously maintained.

Out of body time: The out of body time, the time for which the follicular unit is outside the body, is the most critical factor for success in hair transplant. Aroyam Hair Transplant follows a special procedure to ensure that this time is the minimum. This is done by doing only 1000 follicular units at a time and then replanting them. This ensures that time out of body is less than or equal to1 hour only. This is the shortest period acheivable. Many centers do upto 2000-2500 follicular units at a time so that time out of body goes upto 4-5 hours. We are proud of our time out of body quantum. Though this may cause some sacrifice of time but results are more important.

Follow up: follow up period is critical for the patient when there are many doubts and anxieties in his mind. In our clinic, Dr. P. J. Mazumdar will remain always accessible to the patient directly on his personal mobile for any questions the patient may have during this period.
